LEN_40106_TA - Introduction to Linguistics (S1-2A - 2024-25)

This course will examine some of the key concepts, debates and issues in gender studies with regard to queer representation and the moving image. Queer cinemas have historically been relegated to a position of lesser importance - or in some cases no importance - and even today their relationship with the image, in particular with regard to appearances, is not straightforward. The programme will introduce students to analysis of films that arguably fit in the ‘queer canon’ as well as films that ‘queer’ gender. We will study some of the
most important texts on visual representation in anglophone academia to date, bringing together questions of class, race, sexuality and gender.
