LHANG 1A1 - An Introduction to American Literature

Overview:
In this course, students will be provided with a broad overview of American literature from the British colonies to the 21st century. We will be reading and analyzing excerpts from some of the major texts in the history of American literature, and we will link them to the social, political, intellectual, and artistic context in which they were written. In this course, students will also be given multiple opportunities to:
- learn the tools of literary analysis,
- practice the methodology of close reading,
- and improve their reading, speaking, and writing skills in English.


Course objectives / learning outcomes:
After completing this course, students will be able to:
- Research and identify reliable and relevant information on a given subject from a number of sources;
- Identify several formal and stylistic elements in a literary text;
- Write a partial analysis to support an interpretation of a literary text;
- Demonstrate knowledge of major periods, authors, genres, and texts of American literature;
- Use grammatically acceptable English and an adequate range of vocabulary when writing and speaking about literature.
