Lesson 4- Oct 24th
Completion requirements
After playing quizlet list 3 and listening to 2 very good presentations we read about gaslighting.
We read article on page 26 and listened to a video called How to regognize medical gaslighting.
the key to the text and video follows:
1. What is medical gaslighting? Who is more likely to experience medical gaslighting? (use your own words and not the words of the text) Medical gaslighting is when a physician or other medical professional dismisses or downplays a patient’s physical symptoms or attributes them to something else, such as a psychological condition. Medical gaslighting is especially likely to happen to women and people of colour2. Mention at least one example of a condition that is most likely to be medically gaslit by doctors. Coronary heart disease where doctors were significantly less certain of a diagnosis in women patients, and women were twice as likely as men to have their symptoms attributed to a mental health condition. Similarly, other research demonstrated that women with heart disease were treated less aggressively and weren’t as well represented in clinical trials. Women receive Cancer diagnoses later than men. An investigation at an emergency department found that women with abdominal pain were less likely than men with the same issue to receive pain medication, and even when they did receive pain medication, they waited longer to get it. Furthermore, an analysis of emergency department records from several U.S. states demonstrated that Black and Latino people were more likely to have their stroke symptoms misdiagnosed.
3. What does the writer attribute medical gaslighting to? Research shows that the U.S. National Institutes of Health have historically overfunded diseases affecting men and underfunded those impacting women, leading to gaps in medical knowledge on women's health. Additionally, discrimination persists in medicine, with one study finding that Black patients are 2.5 times more likely than White patients to be negatively described in their medical records.
4. What solutions to this problem are suggested in the article? To what extent do you agree with these propositions? Solving issues like limited patient time, reliance on biases, inadequate mental health training, and doctor burnout. Medical professionals should be trained to recognize and avoid implicit biases. Patients, particularly women and people of color, must be aware of how their symptoms might be dismissed and should advocate more strongly for their care.
8. What condition was Elizabeth Moore suffering from? How prevalent is this condition among women, and how easy is its diagnosis? An autoimmune disease. Women get it 4 times more than men. It is a very difficult condition to diagnose because these diseases are slow in developing and have a very wide range of symptoms
9. What were her symptoms? How long did she have to wait before receiving the correct diagnosis? Numbness and tingling in her arms, legs and body. Sometimes she would feel very heavy and would struggle to move. She had to wait for 12 years before being correctly diagnosed.
10. According to the video, which group of people is mostly affected by medical gaslighting? Women. Usually, their symptoms are dismissed as minor, imaginary or psychological or can be blamed on weight. Women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with a mental illness such as anxiety for example.
11. What advice is given in the video to confront this problem? What do you think of that? Say it again. that gives the provider a chance to reconsider. Bring a friend or relative who can serve as an advocate. If the doctor is still not listening, move to another doctor and get the right diagnosis
