After playing quizlet list 3 and listening to 2 very good presentations we read about gaslighting.

We read article on page 26 and listened to a video  called How to regognize medical gaslighting.

the key to the text and video follows:

1. What is implied by the term "medical gaslighting"? Which medical conditions are primarily affected, and which category of patients is most impacted? It’s when a medical practitioner dismisses the symptoms of a patients or treats them as exaggerated. Heart diseases, chronic but poorly understood diseases and cancer are primarily affected. Women and people belonging to minority groups are mostly concerned

 2. What is the problem with medical algorithms for diagnosis? What does that imply? Most of these medical algorithms were built around young white men who constitute the majority of participants in clinical trials, consequently medical caregivers are largely uninformed when it comes to the rest of the populations. This highly impacts diagnosis of patients and can lead to misdiagnosis.

 3. According to the author, what is the solution to the problem of medical gaslighting? Can you think of other solutions? “Until a much greater part of society is included in that statistical reckoning, we can expect medical gaslighting to remain a part of our medical experiences. “

Watch the video “How to recognize medical gaslighting” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXr8flkXWLs, then answer the questions in pairs

 1. What is the MeToo of healthcare and why has it been given this name? The MeToo of healthcare is a movement aimed at raising awareness about medical gaslighting, which disproportionately affects women. Its name encourages individuals to speak out, shed light on its dangers, and work toward addressing it as a significant issue in the healthcare system.

2. Before receiving the correct diagnosis, what diagnosis was Maria Garcia given? She was told that she was overweight, depressed and needed psychotherapy, that there was nothing wrong with her and that she just needed to slim down, or that she just needed to learn how to live with her symptoms

 3. What were her symptoms? Intense stomach pain and back pain, vomiting, weakness and hair loss.

4. What does she put her misdiagnosis down to? How did that impact her? She puts that down to her being an overweight Hispanic woman. On one side, she felt she was crazy and on the other she almost lost her life.

 5. According to the video, what are the causes of medical gaslighting? Which diseases are the most affected? Studies show bias against women, especially those of color. This is a problem across healthcare from treatment to research. Most of the data is used today in medicine is based on research on men, male animals or male cells. Autoimmune diseases are mostly affected

. 6. What is being done to confront this form of missed diagnosis? What advice is given in to patients who feel they are being gaslighted? What else should be done? Leaders at top hospitals are pushing for change, trying to secure more funding for women's health research, or training more doctors on how to recognize gender biases while empowering female patients to advocate for themselves. Medicine is really a team work. Patients should keep a detailed diary of symptoms to show doctors, ask for a thorough physical exam and not be afraid to get a second, third or even fourth opinion

Next week Oct 31st there is no class. As homework we must look at the other video, prepare vocab 3 and 4 as there is a test next class and prepare the presentation for those that present.

Also learn the expressions on page 24 for the opinion writing during lesson 7
