The practical course ‘Stem Cells’ includes two weeks of full-time laboratory work. From a thematic perspective, this course enables to gain a better understanding of stem cell biology by conducting experiments on different types of stem cells (pluripotent, multipotent, oligopotent) from several biological models (mice, Xenopus and Drosophila, respectively) at different stages of development (embryonic or adult). The experiments are conducted in vitro or in vivo.
It is organised into three mini-projects:
(1) ‘In vitro pluripotency from ES to iPS cells’, which focuses on cultured mammalian pluripotent stem cells.
(2) ‘Are Hedgehog and/or Wnt signalling pathways involved in neural crest cell specification and migration?’, which focuses on neural crest cells in Xenopus embryos
(3) ‘Homeostasis of Drosophila adult midgut’, which focuses on Drosophila intestinal stem cells.
