    • Dear 2nd Year students,

Welcome to the 2nd year English course.

The English teachers for 2nd year are Ms Navel, Ms. Owens, Ms Fadel, Ms Warrach, Mr Nairn, Ms Stonick, Ms Weyrich, Mr Danan, Mr Williams and Mr Blanchard.
Teacher in charge of this Teaching Unit (UE): Ms Navel - office LC.349 (3rd floor in Eiffel)
      (bibiane.navel@universite-paris-saclay.fr)

      /!\ IMPORTANT:
English classes are NOT at Henri Moissan, but at the Language Center, in CentraleSupélec's Eiffel building (5-10min walk from BPC: please take this parameter into account to be on time!). Our classrooms are on the 3rd (sometimes 4th) floor of the building. Make sure you take an elevator or staircase where "Centre de Langues" is clearly indicated ! Classes start on 30th of September.

Classes are every week from 5.30 to 7 pm, on Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday (depending on your group). When you have lab work ("TP") just before, please let your lab work teacher know that you have to leave in time for your English class.

Note that the CROUS Uni restaurant at Eiffel is open from 6.30 to 8pm!

Groups according to levels: All students are placed in groups according to your level in English. Please go to the "Placement par niveau" section and do it before Sept 15th! (now closed)
You will be placed in your group a few days after the 15th. You will be notified once it is done.

You will find below a PDF version of the booklet on which we will work (on this page, just below this text). You MUST HAVE A COPY of the booklet with you for your English classes. You may get a copy from the "corpo" or you may have it printed by your parents, or have it on an ipad/computer.

In this eCampus course, under the name of your teacher, you will find the documents that were used in class or that the teacher wishes your study at home.

Mastering English is an absolute necessity for anyone who wants to work in pharmacy (and, more generally, in science), no matter if your ambition for the future is to work in a community pharmacy, in the pharmaceutical industry, or as a hospital pharmacist.

Therefore, in the 2nd year of Pharmacy studies at Paris Saclay University, attendance to English classes is 100% compulsory (you MUST come to class or you will not be admitted to the exams) and any absence must be justified with a valid written document within 3 days: see your English teacher about this. Justifications must be sent to both your teacher and the school office.

The aim of the 2nd year English course is to help students acquire new skills in scientific English, particularly in oral communication.

      Objectives

By the end of the year, all students should be able to:

      - understand a short scientific text in English

      - understand a video report

      - ask and answer questions

      - master a certain number of key grammar points

      - use specific vocabulary related to the fields of health and sciences

      - make a short presentation in English.

      Training material

On this eCampus page, you will find the material for your home classes and material to supplement those studied in class, in order to help you perfect your English.

You will have access to materials designed to help you work on your oral and written comprehension, as well as your oral and written expression:

      - video reports on the topics studied in class

      - texts containing specific vocabulary (diseases, environmental issues, ...)

      - graphs and visuals for presentation practice

      - links to useful websites, where you will find grammar exercises, vocabulary lists, etc.

      Student Evaluation

Continuous Assessment ("Contrôle Continu"): 60% of your final grade:

      1. 2 oral presentations
      2. Vocabulary Quizzes
      3. written production
      4. Video comprehension : 3 minutes approx, with questions (on a topic seen in class)

Final Oral Exam: 40% of your final grade.

Individual presentation of 2 graphs: 30 min. preparation time

5-minute-presentation followed by questions by a teacher. The method is explained in the booklet and will also be seen in class.

      ·         Initial plan to vaccinate everyone had to be rethought because of lack of vaccines

2a.       Why was West Africa challenging when it comes to smallpox eradication?

      ·         so they created a network of informers (help from missionaries in W Africa)

      ·         Poor infrastructures – no paved roads, little means of communication

2b.       They speak about “surveillance and containment” or “ring vaccination”: what does it consist in?

      ·         It consists in vaccinating individuals who were in contact with an infected person

... How effective was it? -> VERY !

2c.       Give details about India (the situation there, how they organised vaccination, the evolution)

      ·         The biggest problem the programme faced in the 70s, because
