Censored American Literature

What do Edgar Allen Poe, Ernest Hemingway and Harper Lee all have in common? Their stories and novels have all been banned at some point. We may not realize it, but many great American literary works have been censored in certain areas across the United States, and even internationally.

The short story A Tell-tale Heart, written by legendary American author Edgar Allen Poe, known for his dark tales of the macabre, was challenged and banned countless times across America. A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway was banned not only in Ireland, Italy and Germany during the 1920’s and 30’s, but also in certain cities and school districts within the United States. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, perhaps one of the all-time classic and most cherished American novels, continues to be on the top 10 list of banned books.

By getting to know a few American literary treasures and in order to have a better understanding of what “censored” literature really is, we will read, analyse and bring to light some of the most outstanding American literary works.

Evaluations: One oral presentation and one written evaluation “in the style of…” per student.
