This seminar will be devoted to the analysis of a series of images produced throughout the history of England and then the United Kingdom (from the eleventh century to the present day, from the Bayeux Tapestry to Banksy's street art), which occupy a special place in the British collective imagination. We will begin by placing these images in their context, and considering the ways in which they were produced, disseminated and received as material objects. We will then try to determine the processes by which these images have acquired recognition (in both the literal and figurative sense) and have taken on the status of heritage products, as well as the meanings with which these images are invested today. |
